Together We Win: A Message from Homecare President Cristal Dejarnac
Dear Fellow Homecare Workers,
Every day, we make it possible for thousands of seniors and people with disabilities to live safely and independently in their homes. Our compassion, skill, and dedication are what keep Oregon’s communities strong. This month, I want to take a moment to celebrate all of us — the caregivers who show up with love, patience, and strength, day after day.
Because of our participation and solidarity, we have just ratified a historic new contract that raises wages, expands training, and improves benefits for homecare workers across Oregon. This victory belongs to every member who took the time to attend meetings, vote, and stand together for respect and fair pay.
Homecare work is often unseen, but its impact is everywhere. Whether we’re helping someone start their morning, preparing a meal, or simply being there to listen, we bring dignity and stability to the people we care for.
As union members, we’ve proven once again that when we organize, we win. Let’s keep building on this momentum, supporting one another, and making sure every caregiver in Oregon is valued for the essential work we do.
In solidarity and gratitude,
Cristal Dejarnac
President, SEIU 503 Homecare

SEIU 503, Coalition Partners Free Wildland Firefighter from ICE Detention
Wildland firefighter Rigoberto Hernandez was released from ICE custody after being detained for a month, following successful rallying efforts by SEIU 503 Immigration Committee members, the Oregon for All Coalition, Innovation Law Lab and Oregon Senator Ron Wyden. Hernandez is a qualified sawyer who does the dangerous work of falling trees in the line of wildfires.
Hernandez was battling the Bear Gulch fire in Western Washington when ICE raided the fire lines to take firefighters into custody. Hernandez has lived in the US since he was 4 years old and has been awaiting a response to his application for legal status since 2018.
Once Hernandez was released, his removal proceedings were cancelled.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the resilience, wisdom, and contributions of Indigenous peoples — the original stewards of this land. This day reminds us to reflect on our shared history, recognize the harm caused by colonization, and celebrate the rich cultures and traditions that continue to thrive today.
SEIU 503’s Indigenous People’s Caucus is cosponsoring a free event at the Capitol Mall Park in Salem. Learn more online here.
