There’s a lot on the Line for SEIU Members on November 5th
By Ibrahim Coulibaly, SEIU 503 CAPE ChairÂ
The 2024 General Election is just a few days away, and the stakes could not be higher for workers in Oregon and across the nation. From the U.S. Supreme Court to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and federal agency policies, the outcome of the presidential election – and other races – will have a major impact on us and our nation for generations to come.
SEIU Oregon members are on the ground in swing states doing everything within our power to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House. Here in Oregon, we’re knocking on thousands of doors and talking to voters to help win tight races from Congress to city council.

No matter the outcome of the elections at state and national levels, our union is strong. No candidate or politician holds our power: We do. We know that no one election will determine our future. We will. No matter what happens we’ll come together to fight for unions for all and a just economy. But would we also rather have candidates who support workers in office? Hell yeah. So, let’s go make it happen!
There is still time to make an impact. As Chair of CAPE, our union’s voluntary political action committee, I am asking you to do the following to help us win on November 5th:
- Vote. You can view our union’s endorsements here.
- Contribute to CAPE. Members like you and me giving $8 or $10 adds up and is our only way to compete against billionaires and corporations. Contribute to CAPE today.
- Sign up to knock on doors or make phone calls. Speaking directly with voters is the most powerful way to help elect pro-worker champions, and we need your help. Register here.
The November 5th election is our opportunity to elect pro-worker champions up and down in local and national races to ensure pro-worker voices are heard. Join me and thousands of SEIU Oregon members in doing everything possible to elect member-endorsed candidates to office.
In January 2025 SEIU Local 503 in-home care providers will be getting another cost-of-living increase of .50 cents per hour, plus another $1 per hour for those who meet 2000 regular hours of work. It’s because of your collective action during contract negotiations that we were able to win regular wage increases and a pay scale in our most recent contract. Around Our Union – News Happening in Other Sectors: Volare Health Nursing Homes
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) at the ten Volare Health nursing homes voted yes to joining our union by a margin of 95%. This campaign was unique in that nearly every other worker in these nursing homes are already part of our union, so the LPNs were able to see the union difference firsthand.
Now, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) have elected to join our union, building power for all workers. This is the first National Labor Relations Board (NLRB ) election for LPNs, and the first NLRB nursing home election campaign Local 503 has run in many years.
Nursing home bosses always run anti-union fear campaigns during union elections, and this was no exception – but due to strong organizing by the workers, it was largely a waste of money by the boss.
