International Workers’ Day is May Day, Friday, May 1st and we plan to honor Oregon workers on this day – and fight for immigrant justice – with an event at the State Capitol in Salem.
We are partnering with PCUN, Oregon’s farmworker union, to host this all-day event, where we will combine culture with entertainment and solidarity, standing in unity with immigrant workers to end Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) terror in our communities.
Remember to save the date!
Friday, May 1, 2026
Noon to 2 p.m.
Oregon State Capitol Park, Salem
RSVP Today!
This is a family-friendly event with cultural performances, inspirational speakers, a solidarity march, food, and much more. Shuttles will be available for people coming from Portland and Eugene.
In the meantime, our work to defend immigrants continues, and you can take action right now. Enterprise Rent-A-Car rents their vehicles to ICE, making it possible for the agency to terrorize neighborhoods to conduct their aggressive and often unconstitutional immigration raids. We are calling on the state of Oregon to end its contract with the company – add your name to the petition by clicking here.
The Primary Election is One Month Away!
Oregon’s May 19th Primary Election is just over a month away, and now is the perfect time to get involved. Through CAPE, our political action committee, SEIU members identified candidates from City Council to Congress to build our power and center working families. With federal funding cuts impacting every budget, we’re going to need champions to fight for us when tough decisions are made.
Our members aren’t millionaires. We are working Oregonians fighting for a better future for our families. The good thing is, there are a lot of us, and there is strength in numbers. We can’t cut big checks, but we can donate $10 a month to CAPE, and we can bring people power to talk to voters and make sure every vote counts.
You can help by getting involved and helping our candidates cross the finish line. Sign up for a canvass or phone bank shift today.
Here are three actions you can take right now:
‘Serious Incident Prevention’ Course Now Required in All Languages
We’re happy to share that the Oregon Home Care Commission (OHCC) has translated the core Serious Incident Prevention (SIP) course into several languages. These courses will be available starting May 1, 2026.
Before now, the SIP course was not required for non-English-speaking providers who wanted to earn or renew their Professional Development Certification while the translations were being completed.
Beginning on this date, all non‑English speaking providers will be required to complete the core SIP course to earn a new Professional Development Certification or renew an existing one. This requirement will no longer be waived.
You can check out OHCC’s upcoming Class Schedule for May and June 2026 here.

Around our Union: Hill Valley Mount Tabor Workers Vote YES to Form a Union

On Wednesday, April 8, workers at Hill Valley Mt. Tabor Health and Rehab voted to form a union. This is important for workers to have a stronger voice at work; next, they will begin bargaining their first contract.
Their win follows the workers at Hill Valley Laurelhurst, who have already had a union, showing a growing effort among workers to stand together.
Beware Of Mailers That Seem Misleading or Confusing
Have you gotten one of these mailers and/or emails from “Opt Out Today” lately? They are trying to make you believe they stand up for Oregon workers, but the truth is, they are an anti-worker organization funded by wealthy corporations who want nothing more than to take away workers’ rights and your ability to bargain great contracts.
Opt Out Today, also known as the Freedom Foundation, is afraid of unions and afraid of worker power. They know that when workers stop paying dues, they limit collective bargaining power and the ability to win strong contracts. Without strong contracts, employers can get away with lower wages and working conditions. Why would any pro-worker organization invest so much time and money trying to whittle down worker power?
If you see one of these Opt Out Today anti-worker postcards in your mailbox, plop it into your recycling bin – don’t give up your membership and don’t give up your power.
