Homecare workers have been fighting for respect and to be validated for decades. We were treated like babysitters and paid like babysitters, until we formed a union 20 years ago. For every two steps forward, it’s been a step back as lawmakers continue to undervalue the crucial services that care workers provide. Now, we have a President who not only sees the value in care work, but considers himself a “union guy” and has a plan to invest $400 billion in caretaking. This is the recognition at the highest level of government that care providers have been waiting for. This is big, but we have to make sure it leads to real change that we can see here in Oregon.

President Biden’s American Jobs Plan is a major investment in American infrastructure. What’s different is that this plan includes caregiving as part of American infrastructure! Specifically for care providers, the American Jobs Plan will:

  • Invest $400 million in caregiving over the next decade.
  • Expand access to long-term care services under Medicaid.
  • Put in place an infrastructure to create good middle-class care jobs with a free and fair choice to join a union.

This will be an absolute game-changer for care providers, just like forming a union was for our members 20 years ago. We’ve fought hard to reach this moment, and must see it through to the finish line. Call 877-689-2371 and tell Congress to support the American Jobs Plan!
