If the federal government shutdown continues into November, food support benefits through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be disrupted for thousands of Oregon households due to federal funding and eligibility changes from the current administration.
Homecare workers are the backbone of Oregon’s long-term care system. Most earn modest wages and rely on programs like SNAP to make ends meet. Losing food assistance means choosing between groceries, gas, or medication — an impossible trade-off for workers who care for our state’s most vulnerable residents. In Oregon, roughly 1 in 3 homecare workers are people of color, nearly half are age 55 or older, and a significant portion rely on public assistance to make ends meet.* *https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2023I1/Downloads/CommitteeMeetingDocument/277708?utm_source
As we face continued uncertainty from Washington, D.C., our union remains committed to making sure no worker stands alone. That means always working to ensure that every member has access to reliable information, vital resources, and real support. When times are tough, we pull together — because our union family stands strongest when we care for one another.
Our union, SEIU Local 503, is always working to ensure that members have access to reliable information and real support — especially during times like this.
Many Oregonians are worried about access to essential resources like food, utilities, and long-term care. Fortunately, Oregon has strong safety nets in place — and two key connections can help right now: 211 and ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Connection).
What 211 Can Do for You
- Oregon’s 211 directory is a free service which includes emergency food assistance, help with bills, and local support programs.
- Dial 2-1-1 or text your ZIP code to 898211 to get started.
- During federal shutdowns or other crises, 211 can help you find which services are still available.
What ADRC Offers — and Why It Matters Now
- The ADRC of Oregon makes it easier for older adults and people with disabilities to find local care and support.
- Services include free information and referrals, counseling, and help connecting with in-home care, transportation, and meal programs.
- Through ADRC, you can access Meals on Wheels and other food supports that remain open during the shutdown. You can also check for updates at Oregon DHS Food Resources.
- To reach Oregon’s ADRC, call 1-855-ORE-ADRC (1-855-673-2372) or visit oregon.gov/odhs/adrc. Please share this information with coworkers and community members who may need it.
About SNAP in Oregon
SNAP is entirely federally funded and helps more than 1 in 6 people in Oregon — about 18 percent of households — buy groceries. This includes children, working families, older adults and people with disabilities.
Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates $1.50 to $1.80 in local economic activity, driving an estimated $1.6 billion into Oregon’s economy each year.
