Workers at Meadow Park nursing home in St. Helens have secured another major win, defending their hard-fought healthcare and paid time off (PTO) benefits in the face of new ownership.
Last fall, Meadow Park became the first nursing home in Oregon history to authorize a strike, winning access to the Essential Workers Healthcare Trust (EWHT, an affordable, high-quality health plan), stronger staffing language, and major raises for ancillary staff.
When Kalesta Healthcare, a California-based company, moved to buy the facility this spring, they proposed replacing the healthcare plan with one 12 times more expensive and slashing PTO benefits in half. Workers took action immediately and mobilized—circulating petitions, taking workplace actions, and preparing to strike. Just days before the sale finalized, Kalesta backed down and agreed to preserve the existing benefits.
Meadow Park workers won again—thanks to their unity, strength, and credible strike threat.
