On December 18, the U.S. Senate voted 65 to 31 to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the Clinton-era military policy that forbids openly gay men and women from serving in the military. Eight Republicans sided with Democrats to strike down the ban. President Obama signed the bill into law on December 22, 2010.
