The Oregon Legislature is currently considering the Public Safety Workforce Stability Act of 2024 to provide enhanced retirement benefits to Oregon State Hospital workers who have direct contact with patients and 911 telecommunicators. If the legislation is passed, the definition of “workers who have direct contact with patients” will be determined by the rulemaking process.

For years, the Governor’s Office and the Oregon Legislature have failed to address the critically low and dangerous staffing levels and retention issues at the Oregon State Hospital. It is time for our elected officials to act and follow through on their promise to prioritize mental and behavioral health and the workforce that provides those services during, perhaps, the most difficult time in someone’s life.
