Among SEIU Homecare Local 99’s original member-leaders, Annie Smith was a longtime champion of civil rights and economic justice. Annie recounted memories from her early childhood in Mississippi, where she worked in cotton fields with her grandmother, who also included Annie in pickets, boycotts, and acts of civil disobedience. Here in Oregon, Annie was deeply committed to bringing joy and peace to the lives of her homecare clients as well as to the vision of a fighting, militant union. Her resilience in service to that vision, and willingness to meet the many challenges of union leadership, by engaging as a political canvasser, an educator of other members, and a facilitator giving voice to others, made her a role model and inspiration to this union. Annie passed away in 2018, and those who worked and led alongside her are grateful she made SEIU 503 part of her life’s work.
