In recent weeks you may have seen notices from Universities across the state, announcing their plans to mandate the Covid-19 vaccine for Fall reopening. We are disappointed that most Universities neglected to notify or consult with Union leadership before sending the notice. Since these announcements began, we’ve heard from many Higher Education members, and though responses have varied, it is clear that we all want to understand what these mandates will mean for members and their families.

Do I have to get the vaccine to continue working?
We support the Covid-19 vaccine, and hope that you will get it if you’re able to do so. However, we also understand that not everyone is able to be vaccinated. We have sent the Universities a demand to bargain over vaccine mandates and reopening plans. Bargaining with management over this issue will help us to mitigate how the mandates will impact people with medical, religious, or philosophical exemptions under Oregon law. Our Union is committed to supporting our members’ health and wellbeing both in and outside of the workplace.

What’s next?
We are currently waiting to hear back from the Universities about our demand to bargain and will be sure to keep you updated. Watch this space for the latest news and information.
