Renée Richards is an American ophthalmologist and former tennis player who was successful on the professional circuit in the 1970s. She was a pioneer of trans women rights when she fought to compete as a woman in the 1976 US Open. She  was initially denied, and took the case to the New York Supreme Court and won, setting a new precedent for people who are trans.
