Thuy Huyen

After working in accounting at Portland State University for almost 18 years, my fellow members asked me to run for President of our sublocal, SEIU 89. I stepped up, filed my paperwork, and won the election in April 2020. My experience as a union member has taught me that taking on new challenges may be intimidating, but that I’m capable of doing anything I set my mind to and that my union has my back. No matter who you are or where you work, I will always have your back. Prior to PSU, I worked as a teacher and childcare center director. My professional life has always centered on service and education. Growing up a Vietnamese refugee made me aware of my roots as well as how fortunate I am to be an American. I’ve honored my culture through serving in various Vietnamese civic associations since high school, including serving as Vice President of the Vietnamese Community of Oregon from 2016-2018. For the last 5 years, I’ve served hot meals to hundreds of people experiencing homelessness every Tuesday after work and every Sunday. The Oregon Food Bank honored my volunteer work to fight hunger with an award in 2017. I also volunteer at Portland State University for New Student Orientation and Commencement, Blanchet House, Transition Projects, Portland Animal Welfare Team, Meals on Wheels, Public Libraries, Dress for Success, A Better Oregon, Powered by People, and religious organizations. I’m willing to put in the work and devote myself to organizations that align with my values. Serving on the SEIU 503 Board of Directors would allow me the opportunity to serve all of you. As a member led organization, we are the stewards of our future. I’m committed to lead by listening as I’ve done at PSU and to ensure that every member of SEIU 503 has the support they need to thrive. I’m asking for your vote so we can lead our union, together. Thank you.
