Andrea Kennedy-Smith

It has been my privilege and honor to have served as your first Asian-American Vice President. I am requesting your trust and confidence, once again, in voting for me this year. I hope I continue to have the opportunity to listen, respond, learn and lead. I’m committed to making a positive impact and further empowering our members while standing shoulder to shoulder for the good of the entire membership. My goals center around inclusivity, transparency, accessible information, training and membership growth. I’ve worked at DHS-Child Welfare as a Paralegal for 13 years. This year I’m working as a Contract Specialist for the Human Services Coalition. I’m passionate about the rights of workers to be treated fairly and to be able to come to work in an environment free of fear. My dedication for union work and having our voices heard is very strong. As Chief Steward in Washington County I have assisted countless members, mentored stewards as well as provided ongoing support and guidance. I was the Secretary for Sub-Local 216 for a number of years. I’m on the Child Welfare Planning Committee, giving members a strong voice, working on building a clear perspective of the issues and solutions that we’d like to see with the Child Welfare system in Oregon, with a focus on making Child Welfare positions sustainable careers. I’ve testified before the Oregon legislature advocating for full funding/staffing as well as manageable caseloads for Child Welfare. Unions have taught me to value belonging, transparency, integrity, engagement and the importance of leading in an open and democratic way. Our union, can only be as strong as our involvement within it. We need strong and knowledgeable leadership to guide our union. Facilitating and maximizing our collective potential as an influential, member-engaged union is my primary focus. I’ve worked towards those goals while serving on the board by being a strong advocate and voice for our membership. As an experienced union leader with a strong passion for the labor movement, I have an unwavering commitment to strengthen our union, the confidence to stand alone if needed, and the courage to make difficult decisions. I am ready to continue the work of strengthening and diversifying our union, bargaining good contracts and involving our members in every aspect of our union. I humbly ask for your support as I campaign for a better union with members at the center.
