Puzzle #3

Congratulations! You made it to Puzzle #3! The next set of clues is hidden inside the hotel.

This puzzle will be available at 5:30pm on Friday, August 2. Come back after that time and refresh this page to see the puzzle.

Step 1: Find the viewpoints

All viewpoints in the images below are inside the Portland Hilton, on one of the publicly-accessible floors: Main lobby, Plaza level, Ballroom level, or 3rd-floor conference level. Find each viewpoint, then answer a question about each one and add your answers together to solve the puzzle. Remember to write down or save each number in your notes app as you find it, so you can add them up at the end.

Viewpoint A
an arrangement of accordion-pleated metallic circular sculptures hanging on a wall

Viewpoint B
a sculpture in the shape of a cross-section of a large tree trunk with an irregular hollow shape in the center, covered in a silver metallic veneer

Viewpoint C
an abstract heart-shaped mark on a wooden table

Viewpoint D
A black and white block print of a man holding a handkercheif to his face. An image of an upside-down disembodied head in profile is to his right.

Step 2: Answer the questions

Question 1

Find viewpoint A. A = The total number of the pictured circular sculptures hanging in this section of  the wall. Note that there are three clusters of these circles. The two smaller clusters have only four circles each. You are looking for the number in the larger cluster, not including the two smaller clusters. (2-digit number)

Question 2

Find viewpoint B. What direction are you facing at this viewpoint? (all directions are approximate, since the Portland downtown street grid was built to align with magnetic north, or about 19.25° east of true north). Use your compass!

If you are facing…
…approximately North/NorthEast, then B = 100.
…approximately East/SouthEast, then B = 200.
…approximately South/SouthWest, then B = 300.
…approximately West/NorthWest, then B = 400.

Question 3

Find viewpoint C, then look directly above you. C = the number of circular lights. (2-digit number)

Question 4

Find viewpoint D. D = the year the print was made. (4-digit number)

Step 3: Solve the puzzle

To solve the puzzle, add A+B+C+D. The answer is a four-digit number.
