Amplifying Union Voices: SEIU 503 Rejoins Oregon AFL-CIO

We are more powerful when we stand together and this week, SEIU 503 announced we will re-join the Oregon AFL-CIO, the statewide federation of labor Unions. Our partnership is especially timely right now, enabling workers to magnify our voices as we get ready to bargain new contracts for the 2025 – 2027 cycle.

This move reflects our shared commitment to advancing the rights, protections and power of Oregon’s working families. Unions are popular right now, winning historic and life-changing contracts across sectors across the state and country, and reuniting with the Oregon AFL-CIO will enable SEIU 503 to build a stronger labor movement, even giving some workers their first chance to join a Union.

This re-affiliation will give Oregon workers more power to stand strong and fight back against anti-worker policies. The decision for SEIU 503 to rejoin Oregon AFL-CIO was approved by hundreds of elected member delegates at the SEIU 503 General Council in August 2024.

President’s Corner

by Cristal Dejarnac, SEIU 503 Homecare President

The results of the recent presidential election have left many with a sense of deep concern and uncertainty about what lies ahead. While the outcome brings many unknowns, our union’s commitment to supporting workers’ rights, safeguarding union values, and protecting essential homecare programs for consumers and providers remains steadfast.

In times like these, unity is our strength. We must stay focused on the vital issues that impact us all—fair working conditions, reliable benefits, and sustainable funding for the programs our communities depend on. No matter what changes may come, our Union stands ready to support every member. Together, we’ll continue fighting for a future that honors our work, respects our needs, and advances our shared goals.

And speaking of shared goals…in-home care providers begin bargaining a new contract with the State very soon. One way to make sure your voice is part of shaping our future is by completing our upcoming bargaining survey. By sharing your perspective, you help strengthen our stance in negotiations and ensure our priorities are clear. Be sure to watch your email in early December for your survey.

If you aren’t currently a member…this is a great time to join us! The more workers who join our union, the stronger our position at the bargaining table in gaining great wages and benefits!

Additionally, remember that open enrollment for health insurance is happening now. Signing up by December 15th will start your coverage on January 1st, 2025, while enrollment between December 16th and January 15th begins coverage on February 1st, 2025. Don’t miss this essential step to secure your health coverage in the coming year.

Help secure funding for our next contract!

The 2025 legislative session begins soon; resources at the state will be tight, and we will have to compete with other important services to get the funding we need for a good contract. That means homecare and personal support workers need to speak up, share our stories at the legislature and with the public to get the support needed to secure a great contract this bargaining cycle.
