Adult Protective Services Specialist Phil Newton refused to remain silent after witnessing one of his coworkers at Grants Pass DHS offices being wrongfully terminated. Once he learned that the contract had been violated, Phil sprung into action by becoming a Steward in the Grants Pass APD office. First among his to-dos was filing a grievance for his now unemployed colleague.

Phil mobilized his worksite quickly by moving a petition and gaining support from fellow members throughout the Grants Pass offices. As result of the support, the terminated member was able to return to DHS in a new position.

“The successful resolution of this grievance demonstrates to our employer that we stand united in the defense of just cause, progressive discipline, a retaliation-free workplace and respect for the spirit and letter of our Collective Bargaining Agreement.”
