ODHS/OHA Text Action Makes a Big Difference
Back in February, OEP (Oregon Eligibility Program) members worked with Sublocal 200 ODHS/OHA leadership on a campaign to allow more interview time for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) applicants. Workers were having to rush through these interviews, impacting their morale and the quality of services for Oregonians.
Together, they hatched a plan. Union members would text program director Nate Singer about their demand all at the same time during a monthly meeting between program directors and Sublocal 200 officers. Hundreds of staff participated in this text action, flooding Singer’s phone with messages.
“This was a fun and unique action that had a great result, we could not have done this without members raising concerns and taking action,” said Jenn Cranmer, President of Sub Local 200 ODHS/OHA.
Through direct action, OEP workers won 15 additional minutes for SNAP interview appointments. This isn’t just a win for our members; it’s a win for all Oregonians who need this benefit. When members act together, we win!
