As we observe Veterans Day, the SEIU 503 Veterans Caucus wishes to recognize everyone who served, with a focus on Women Vets in Oregon, one of our own union homecare members Alice Redding (soon to be an SEIU 503 Retiree, former Marine), our American Legion Pioneer Post 149 (First All-women Post in Oregon, located in Salem), and the crisis facing veterans of being unhoused.

This holiday season, our AFRAM and Veteran Caucuses are teaming together for a Toys for Tots and Winter Clothing Drive for the unhoused going on now through 12/16/2023 at both our SEIU Local 503 Salem Headquarters and Portland Offices. Please donate what you can to kids and veterans in need.

Members and their families have many activities/events to choose from that are scheduled around the state for Veterans Day. Here are three you may not know of that our members are participating in:

  • November 10th, American Legion Pioneer Post 149 and Salem Bonaventure Assisted Living Annual Veterans Program at 2:00 pm
  • November 11th & 12th, Jefferson Historical Society & Museum (JHS&M) Annual Veterans Program located 114 N. Main St., Jefferson OR 97352 at 10:00 am
  • November 11th, Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs to Host Statewide Veterans Day Ceremony at Oregon State Capital Park at 11:00 am (www.oregon.gov/odva)

Finally, Veterans Day will be observed as a Federal Holiday on Friday 11/10/2023 and at all SEIU 503 office buildings in Oregon. Let’s use this day to lift up our veterans, especially women vets, and help people in need. That’s what service is all about.
