O‘ahu Sugar Strike

In the O‘ahu Sugar Strike of 1920, Japanese and Filipino laborers went on strike together for six months on four major Hawaiian islands. The first inter-ethnic collaboration in Hawai‘i demonstrated the importance of organizing by class-based solidarity rather than by ethnicity to counter plantation owners’ “divide and conquer” tactics.
