In 1964, Patsy Takemoto Mink became the first Asian Pacific American woman elected to Congress from Hawai‘i. In 1974, she was able to pass the Women’s Educational Equity Act to promote gender equality in schools. After her death, the Title IX law was renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
