Kalkofen, Kelly – Dept of Education: Candidate for Assistant Director

My name is Kelly Kalkofen. I am running for Assistant Director, Specials Coalition. I have been an active union member for 10 years and member leader for over two. I am currently your Director for Region 1 and it is an honor to serve. I bring extensive experience to this role. Currently, I serve as Vice President and Steward of my sub local, Oregon Department of Education. Other responsibilities I hold with our union are: CAPE Council Member, Women’s Council Secretary, Climate Justice Committee Member, General Council Delegate, and 2027 Bargaining Delegate. Additionally, I serve as the Executive Board Secretary on the Oregon Labor Federation’s Cascade to Coast Central Labor Chapter.

I am also involved in local politics. I was recently elected as a Precinct Committeeperson. I firmly believe that some of the most meaningful and lasting changes happen at the local level, and those changes require active participation.

I am seeking this office to serve our members. My primary goals are to enhance our service and to advocate for the rights of workers. As we face unprecedented challenges from billionaires (and now a trillionaire), it is imperative that we unite and end the campaign attacks against our labor unions. Together, we must fight against corporations to secure the respect, pay, and benefits that all workers deserve.

One cannot ignore the immense wealth inequality when talking about the attack on labor unions. This is another power grab for the rich to get richer, while keeping the working class at the mercy of those in power. We are currently amid a class war. Organized labor is our best weapon to fight against and win this war.

I am also a dedicated volunteer advocate for the Alzheimer's Association. My involvement has been instrumental in raising awareness and improving access to treatments for those affected by this devastating disease. This advocacy work underscores my commitment to serving our communities, both within and beyond our union.
