VanderZanden, James – DCBS: Candidate for Assistant Director

Hi I'm James VanderZanden. I was one of the public members of the organizing committee at my former workplace from 2017-2021, we won 4 separate NLRB cases despite an illegal firing and unfair layoffs. I have worked at DCBS since 2021 as a Financial Examiner 2, and I am currently serving as president, organizing committee chair and as a steward in our sublocal. I'm here to chew bubblegum and stand up for workers and I am all out of bubblegum.

On day one when I started at DCBS I could see the difference in what SEIU has locked in for workers vs what I experienced in my former non-profit and for-profit private sector roles. I believe we should use our union membership to make our own workplaces better and lock in lasting improvements with each contract. To that end I am currently serving as Vice President, Bargaining Delegate and Steward in my Sub local. I’m amazed at what state workers do and I look forward to seeing what we will continue to accomplish.
