Today, we want you to celebrate with us the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We, AFRAM, want you to do more than that. We want you to question yourselves and be honest about your answers. We desire all to educate themselves on this portion of African American History. There are many books and essays to read from different perspectives that are new or perhaps different to you. Let’s make an effort to cross color lines and talk with people from a different racial or ethnic background, a different religion, or even another country. Try and listen to their perspectives and experiences with an open heart and an open mind. Try to imagine how you’d feel in their situation.
Can we listen to each other’s experiences and try to bridge the gap that still separates people in our country? Can we embrace our fellow Americans and work to ensure we are not the divided states but rather the United States of America? Yes, we believe we can. It’s up to us.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement helped to bring about massive changes in America, but their work was not finished. Here we all are many years later, and color lines still exist. As a country and as a people, we need to continue to work together to ensure equality, opportunity, and justice for all. This is our work, everyone. The time is now. We cannot ignore our shortcomings in unifying our nation. We cannot depend on anyone else to do what needs to be done. This is our mission and if we are brave and steadfast, we can all move forward together, as one people.
An important quote from Dr. King.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Mindfully remember this quote as you go forward in your daily lives. Remember to stand up against injustice and speak out for what is right. Remember to listen to the perspectives of people of other racial and ethnic groups and be wholeheartedly open-minded. Remember to keep stretching your own truth as you know it and challenging yourself to go beyond what has been instilled and taught in our country.
Lastly, remember to ensure that everyone does their part so that hopefully color lines will end here and now.

Nosotros, AFRAM, te invitamos a que haga más que eso. Queremos que se cuestionen y sean honestos con sus respuestas. Deseamos que todos se eduquen sobre esta parte de la historia Afroamericana. Hay muchos libros y artículos para leer con perspectivas diferentes que son nuevas o quizás diferentes para usted. Hagamos un esfuerzo para cruzar las barreras raciales y hablar con personas de diferentes orígenes raciales o étnicos, religión o incluso de las personas provenientes de otro país. Trate de escuchar sus perspectivas y experiencias con un corazón abierto y una mente abierta.
¿Podemos escuchar las experiencias de los demás y tratar de cerrar la brecha que aún separa a las personas en nuestro país? ¿Podemos abrazar a nuestros Compañeros Americanos y trabajar colectivamente para garantizar que no seamos los estados divididos sino los Estados Unidos de América? Sí, creemos que podemos. Depende de nosotros.
El Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. y los otros líderes del Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles ayudaron a lograr cambios masivos en Estados Unidos, pero su trabajo no estaba concluido. Aquí estamos muchos años después, y las barreras raciales aún existen. Recuerda atentamente esta frase a medida que avanzas en tu vida diaria. Recuerda sumarte contra la injusticia y hablar sobre las razones por lo que es correcto hacerlo. Recuerda escuchar las perspectivas de las personas de otros grupos raciales y étnicos y tener una mente abierta de todo corazón. Recuerda seguir ampliando tu propia verdad tal como la conoces y desafiarte a ti mismo a ir más allá de lo que se ha inculcado y enseñado en nuestro país.
Por último, recuerda asegurarte de que todos hagan de su parte para que, con suerte, las barreras raciales terminen aquí y ahora.
